Workshop Faculty

Susan Iadone: Susan Iadone has a varied and active career as a performer, teacher, and coach on recorder, viola, and viola da gamba. Her experiences include accompanying Victoria de los Angeles in recital, recording Klezmer music with Giora Feidman, touring Europe with Meredith Monk’s opera Atlas, and performing at the Metropolitan Opera on sopranino recorder and viola d’amore with the NY Philharmonic. She can be heard on the sound-track of the “Lady Killers” and “Casanova”. She has also made numerous legitimate recordings. She is on the faculty of the St. David’s School in NYC.

Gene Murrow: Gene Murrow has a degree in music from Columbia, studied oboe with Lois Wann at Juilliard, and toured with the New York Renaissance Band and the Paul Winter Consort. He has been coaching at American Recorder Society Chapters and early music workshops throughout the United States for over 35 years, including Pinewoods, Amherst, SFEMS, Port Townsend, and served as ARS President from 1994-2000. In his classes Gene focuses on the techniques of ensemble playing that result in beautifully phrased, in-tune, cogent readings that please both listeners and players alike. He currently is Executive Director of Gotham Early Music Scene, Inc. and serves on the board of Early Music America.

Wendy Powers: Wendy Powers is an active performer and teacher of recorder in New York
City. She received her Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1994.  As a musicologist, she is currently working on an edition of the complete works of the French composer Hesdin (d. 1538) for Broude Brothers. Wendy is assistant director and faculty member of the Amherst Early Music Festival at Connecticut College and is adjunct assistant professor at Queens College of the City University of New York, where she directed the Collegium Musicum in 2006-07. She taught music history at Vassar College in Fall 2007. She is the former book review editor of American Recorder magazine, to which she has contributed articles and reviews and has written about musical instruments for the Metropolitan Museum of Art Timeline of Art History
.

Bruce Larken has been an early music specialist, performer, and teacher of recorder for more than thirty years.  He studied musicology at the Un. of Michigan and early music performance at Sarah Lawrence College.  He has studied with Michael Lynn, LaNoue Davenport, and – especially for pedagogy -- with Eva Legêne.  In 2004 he founded the Richmond Recorder Consort to explore and present a wide-ranging repertoire for recorder in formal and informal concerts.  A former symphony orchestra musician, Bruce now lives in New Haven, Connecticut.  Widely respected as a teacher and ensemble coach, he was conductor of the Connecticut Recorder Orchestra and is a founding member and past director of the American Recorder Teachers Association,  He has taught at many early music workshops, including Amherst, Hudson Guild, and American Recorder Society chapter workshops.  He has been music director of the Eastern Connecticut Recorder Society ARS chapter since 2005.

Richie Henzler will teach if a fifth coach is needed. Richie is a graduate of Juilliard, and has been teaching and performing on the recorder in the greater New York metropolitan area for over thirty years. In 1987 he and his wife Elaine opened Courtly Music Unlimited and in 1989 they began the recital series, American Performer on the Recorder. He and Elaine conduct workshops in the Adirondacks several times a year (held on the shores of beautiful Lake George) and also teach and perform in that area.
