The Westchester Recorder Guild (WRG) invites you to learn to play the recorder and sample its wonderful literature, from "early music" through jazz. Previous knowledge of music is not a requirement. Once you've learned the basics, you can join the WRG and play in one of the regular ensembles.

Coach: Karen Snowberg

Requirements:

Knows the basic fingerings for at least one type of recorder
Should be able to play comfortably in the key of C, and one flat or one sharp
Needs to be able to play at a reasonable rate of speed to keep up with the rest of the class.

You will enjoy the Intermediate A Ensemble if:

  • You have never played in an ensemble before
  • You need experience learning to accurately count dotted rhythms
  • You need experience learning to play accurately in cut-time
  • You need experience learning to play accurately in 6/8-time
  • You are learning to play up an octave on the alto
  • You are learning to play the bass recorder
  • You already play the C recorders and are learning alto or vice versa
  • You have difficulty playing the full range of their instrument
  • You wish to learn to play at a faster speed

Anyone who does not meet these requirements may attend meetings and play along as much as possible or listen but should be taking individual or group lessons to improve basic skills.

Intermediate Ensemble B people should never get lost and not realize it (when they are in one spot and the ensemble is in another).  If this is a frequent occurrence, they will be asked to move back to Ensemble A.

There is always a certain amount of shifting between the two intermediate groups – people advancing due to improvement of their playing skills, and people going back a group for the more relaxed atmosphere, or if their skills have slipped somewhat due to lack of time to practice their recorders, or for experience while learning to play the bass.

We have at times relaxed the requirement for bass recorder for members suffering from arthritis. If this is a problem for you, please consult Karen.

Players who achieve the advanced level are not given a "life-time guaranteed membership." If your skills slip, you may hold back the rest of the class. If so, be thoughtful enough to practice to regain skills or change to the Intermediate B group where you will be more comfortable.
